Heart of Mine

my heart took off all on its own
grew wings and left me all alone
now i marvel at its beauty from afar
want to laugh and cry and sing
the pain and fear and joy it brings
my heart reflecting light from every star

my limbs are strung together
with paper and twine
no use, no use
to this heart of mine

how can  set a steady pace
as i watch my little heart escape
out into the woolly wild unknown
i will follow close behind
despite that i may never find
a way to bring my little heart back home

what slings and arrows may she face
walls built to keep her in her place
destruction and despair at every turn
fierce and lovely may she be
i know my heart is flesh like me
and if she touches fire then she will burn
if she touches fire then she will burn

her every angle catches light
how did i get something so right
a cross, a gift, a fluke, a tragedy
in every blessing is a curse
love lifts us up to something worse
but i can’t remember how things used to be
